Radon is a radioactive gas that can cause lung cancer. It comes from the break down of uranium in the earth. It is released as a gas and makes its way to the Earth's surface and can get trapped inside buildings, especially basements because of their poor ventilation. Radon is invisible, has no taste or odor, and can only be detected with proper radon testing equipement. The EPA recommends that every home buyer should have their home tested for radon before moving in. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, causing an estimated 20,000 deaths annually.
The EPA recommends having your home mitigated to lower the level of radon if your radon level is above a 4.0 pCi/L. The average home in southeast South Dakota has radon levels higher than 4.0 pCi/L. Some homes we have tested have been below 4.0 pCi/L, and some have been much higher. The age of the home has no effect on the levels of radon gas inside it. Old homes and new homes alike are susceptable to radon.
